Heimaey, Iceland 8.9.10

Heimaey was wonderful. I had no expectations of much but found it a beautiful site with a tragic history. In the attached figure you can see where the lava flow ended relative to the town. The rest of the town was under several feet of ash. The recovery has been remarkable. I think this was a 1973 eruption.
